Applesauce Spice Bars

This is a super easy recipe. If you are looking for something that isn’t super difficult, but is super yummy, this is a great recipe to go to.

This week was Mother’s Choice. I had my mom go through my Great Grandmother’s recipe box to find a recipe that she wanted me to make. I made no restrictions for her and this is what she picked. It is basically a really good spice cake, in bar form.

The frosting is really what makes these bars so good. It is a brown butter icing, which means that you use butter that was slightly browned on the stove. The butter gives it a deeper flavor that you wouldn’t have otherwise.

Applesauce Spice Bars

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 2/3 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 cup applesauce
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 egg

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 9 by 13 pan. Whisk all dry ingredients together in a large bowl. In a small bowl mix wet ingredients (This will look kinda weird due to the shortening, but it’s what makes this so yummy). Spread into pan and bake for 25 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool and top with brown butter icing.

Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp butter
  • 1 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 Tbsp milk

Heat butter in small sauce pan on medium heat until light golden brown. (Cool that while you measure out all other ingredients). Mix all of it together in a medium bowl until smooth a spreadable.
